The steering system is one of the most important systems in a car. Driving precision and safety depend on it working properly. That is why correct suspension alignment is so important.
Suspension geometry
Suspension geometry is a set of parameters that define the position and movement of the wheels whilst driving. In practice, this means that suspension geometry determines the car’s stability and how easily it handles. The most important parameter of suspension geometry is wheel toe.
Wheel toe is the relationship between the alignment of the front and rear wheels. In modern cars, wheel alignment is often the only parameter that can be adjusted. It is extremely important, as it determines stability when driving in a straight line, as well as rolling resistance and tyre wear.
How can you tell if there is a problem with the suspension alignment or if the toe is set incorrectly?
One of the most common signs of poor suspension alignment experienced by drivers is the car pulling to one side. This can be observed by letting go of the steering wheel whilst driving on a straight, even road. If the car starts to veer off course on its own, you should book an appointment at a garage to have the wheel alignment checked.
Another sign of a problem with the wheel alignment is a delayed response from the car to steering movements. If you hear the tyres squealing when cornering, this is a sign that you’ll need to visit a garage to have the toe adjusted.
We also offer replacement of brake pads and tyre change.
Wheel alignment – frequently asked questions
What is wheel alignment?
This service ensures that the wheels are correctly aligned with the car’s longitudinal axis. The angle between them is very small and is directly related to the design of the specific model.
What symptoms indicate that the wheel alignment needs adjusting?
First and foremost, problems with the vehicle’s handling and the need to frequently correct the driving line. If the vehicle pulls to the left or right and loses control when cornering, it most likely needs its wheel alignment adjusted.
Should wheel alignment be carried out regularly?
This is not necessary. However, you should consider having your wheel alignment checked as soon as you notice any worrying symptoms. Furthermore, wheel alignment is carried out as part of suspension repairs and servicing, or as a preventative measure – when drivers are planning a long-distance journey.
How long does it take to align the wheels?
Depending on the specific car model and the extent of wear and tear, the entire service may take anywhere from a dozen or so minutes to as long as an hour.
Can you adjust the wheel alignment yourself?
This task can be carried out by yourself, but it requires access to professional workshop facilities and the appropriate qualifications or experience. We therefore advise against attempting to adjust the wheel alignment yourself and recommend that you seek the services of a professional instead.
